Description

Course handles conducting large-scale projects in operations research in pairs (or by oneself with special request). Lab reports and research are some of the main reasons for the existence of the course.

Contents and workload

Requires students to handle two large-scale projects which are relatively hard with strict grading rubrics. Additionally, the second project requires usage of Simulink (MATLAB) which is not a relatively well known program.

Workload in both periods is somewhat equivalent but notably large. Succeeding in the projects likely requires long-term commitment from the pairs.

Practicalities

The course is graded on 1-5 scale with both projects contributing the same weight towards the grade. The course may be requested to be completed on other than the official teaching period noted on Sisu. There have been cases of students completing the course during other periods (e.g. III-V) on their own.

MS-C2105 Introduction to Optimization, MS-C2110 Introduction to Operations Research, MS-E2122 Nonlinear Optimization, MS-E2148 Dynamic Optimization

Additional prerequisites

Dynamic/nonlinear optimization are not required as prerequisites but they help with some of the concepts handled during the course.

It is helpful to have an understanding of MATLAB and specifically Simulink through some other course (for Finnish students see for ex. MS-C2107) to ease getting into the projects. Understanding Hamiltonian systems is a benefit too.
